Construction and Building Inspector

Description Overview: The Construction and Building Inspector works under the supervision of the Mayor to receive applications, establish permit fees, review construction documents and issue permits for the erection, alterations, demolition and moving of buildings and structures, inspect the premises for which such permits have been issued and enforce compliance with the provisions of the Darrington Municipal Code, International Building Codes and other regulations. Duties also include providing support to the Town Council members as needed.

  • Research records and obtain information from other offices and agencies as necessary to prepare reports for the town administration
  • Attend after hours meeting as needed
  • Provide customer services, for concerns and inquiries from citizens in regards to construction and building matters
  • Review and interpret plans, blueprints, site layouts, specifications and construction methods to ensure compliance to legal requirements and safety regulations
  • Issue permits
  • Establish permit fees
  • Inspect and monitor construction projects to ensure adherence to safety standards, building codes and specifications
  • Issue violation notices and stop-work orders, conferring with owners, violators, and authorities to explain regulations and recommend rectifications
  • Assists the Planning Department with the comprehensive plan, zoning ordinances and other policy documents
  • Maintain logs and supplement inspection records
  • Correspond with Town Hall personnel
  • Shall carry proper identification when inspecting structures or premises in the performance of duties
  • Recommend other professional services as needed

  • Exercise sound judgment and knowledge of town ordinances, resolutions, policies and procedures.
  • Exercise sound judgement and knowledge of international building codes and standards, and all related codes as adopted by the state
  • Knowledge in planning, design, and construction
  • Knowledge of materials, methods and tools involved in the construction or repair of structures
  • Must be over the age of 18 years old
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Have or be willing to obtain residential and commercial building inspector certification
  • 5 years construction work experience or training, education equivalent
  • Must have a valid Washington State Driver’s License
  • Knowledge of records management systems techniques
  • Knowledge of safe work practices
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and other administrative products
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications and blue prints
  • Knowledge of Federal, State and local laws and regulations
  • Knowledge of municipal governments administration, operations, policies, procedures and objectives
  • Written and verbal communications skills
  • Organizational skills and must be able to manage, prioritize, mesh numerous assignments and cope with interruptions or last-minute changes while working on multiple tasks under deadlines, with the ability to work with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Function as an independent self-starter with little supervision
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others as a member of the department team
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive materials, records, files, documents and information

Working Conditions and Physical Demands: Work is done in an outside environment subject to interruptions. Employee must dress accordantly to weather conditions and wear proper safety equipment as required. Hand-eye coordination is necessary. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to bend at the waist and kneel or crouch to stand or sit, walk, climb, talk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and or move up to 25+ pounds. Work exposes employee to machinery and its moving parts, fumes, chemicals or toxic substances. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Work may be performed after 5:00pm, weeknights and weekends.
